Listeners, if any of you know who did the beautiful illustration above, please let me know so that I can give them credit. I only found it on Pinterest and it wasn’t attributed to anyone, and I just love it. Mia looks a little more Native American here than I thought, probably because her hair is so straight and she’s wearing that feather earring, but overall she’s got a real dangerous edge to her here, despite (or perhaps because of) her pregnant belly.
In this episode, Miles and I discuss Jake’s conundrum, where he sees Mia in a dream for the first time, and realizes that there’s something going on with Susannah that even she herself isn’t aware of. Jake feels sure that not telling her will lead to the breaking of the Ka-tet, which basically spells doom for all of them because they need to be working in perfect synchronicity in order to survive what’s coming. However, when Jake finally goes to talk to Roland about this, Roland convinces him that Susannah being made aware of her situation will only cause her to lose focus and potentially be a hindrance to them all. This, mind you, after he has already admitted to Jake that he really doesn’t know what they should do.
This is one of those situations that bothers me a lot because I feel like King is writing Jake so that he thinks carefully and rationally about everything, but then doesn’t actually act on those thoughts. Jakes gut is telling him that he should tell Susannah, and that keeping this secret will fuck up the Ka-tet, but once it comes time to confront Roland, he doesn’t really mention any of that. He has the Touch, so if he’d told Roland (after the man damn-near begs for Jake’s advice) that his instinct said they should tell her, then I think Roland would have listened. If he warned about how they all might die because there isn’t unity, I think Roland would have listened. But instead Jake just thinks these totally reasonable, sensible things…and then has a conversation where none of that is discussed. It’s frustrating.
Anyway, I don’t know what to think about this whole thing other than, as before, I DON’T LIKE IT.
Thanks for listening, and I will see you soon with the next 3 chapters of The Dresden Files!
